About Judging

Judging development courses are recognised as the only endorsed judging accreditation course by the Australian Sports Commission and the International Surfing Association.

The role of a Judge in a surfing contest is to decide which surfer performs closest to the Judging criteria in a particular heat.  It is therefore essential that the Judge's have the knowledge, confidence and finally the experience to obtain the correct results.

The “International Judging and Officiating Course” is the first step in becoming a professional surfing Judge and Official.  Upon completion of the International Judging Officiating course each participant will be accredited as a Level 1 Club Judge.  As a pre-requisite for the higher accreditation levels, the course participant must provide 20 hours of judging experience under a qualified Surfing Australia Head Judge. On completion of these hours and finalising the necessary paper work/diary sheets, course participants will be accredited with a Level 2 State Judge qualification. Level 2 Judges can apply for the Level 3 International Judging qualification at any time with documentation of 100 hours of judging experience under a qualified Surfing Australia Head Judge.

The accreditation provides the individual Judge, access to the ISA Judging Exchange Program and the ability to Judge at all ISA sanctioned events.  There are currently 18 countries that are partners in our global development program.

To maintain your judging qualification you must be registered each year (January) the cost of registration renewal is:

  • $25 for a Level 1 Club Judge
  • $35 for a Level 2 State Judge
  • $45 for a Level 3 International Judge

The renewal process is via Surfing Australia's website here:-  Annual Judging Renewal
